How to Identify 70s Vintage Clothing: A Beginner's Guide

If you’re diving into the world of seventies vintage clothing, you’ve come to the right place. The 70s brought us some seriously iconic styles that are perfect for adding a unique twist to your wardrobe. But how do you know if a piece is the real deal? I’m here to help you figure it out! Let’s explore some tips for spotting those authentic 70s finds we all love.

What is Vintage Clothing?

Vintage refers to anything that is 20 years or older – so you may already have some hidden gems in your wardrobe! For this guide, we’re focusing specifically on the groovy styles of the 70s - platforms, flouncy maxi dresses, flares and everything in between.

Check the Labels

One of the easiest ways to identify 70s vintage clothing is by checking the label. Modern high street brands like Marks and Spencer, Miss Selfridge, Topshop, Laura Ashley, Debenhams (to name a few) were around in the 70s, and lucky for us their 70s labels are very distinctive! Below are some images of my favourite (and most common) British 70s brands and their labels – it’s important to note that label designs changed, so if you’ve found the same brand but the label is different, it may well be from a different era.

Examine the Style

Fashion trends in the 70s were bold and diverse, so identifying styles from this era is key:

  • Silhouettes: Look for high-waisted flared trousers, maxi dresses with big sleeves and statement collars.
  • Patterns and Prints: Ditsy floral patterns, paisley prints, and psychedelic colours defined the 70s. Larger floral prints tend to be from the 80s.
  • Design Details: Check for unique features like bell sleeves, crochet elements, and unusual collars that capture the 70s vibe.

Check for Wear and Tear

While a little wear can add character, it’s important to check for any major damage. Assuming you’re already checking for holes, tears and stains, here are my tips for more subtle damage to look out for:

  • Worn seams: if a seam looks worn, you’ll be able to see the stitching underneath. Whilst that’s not necessarily a deal breaker, it may shorten the lifespan of your piece. Having said that, if you’ve got a sewing machine, it’s an easy fix!
  • Fading: A little fading can add character, but sometimes you don’t notice how faded an item is until you get some proper light on it.
  • Smells: Vintage clothing can smell musty. Generally a good wash sorts these things out, but be weary when buying things like leather jackets – give the lining a good smell before buying, dry cleaning can be costly!

Use Online Resources

If you’re still unsure, there are tons of online resources dedicated to vintage clothing. Websites like Vintage Fashion Guild can help you identify pieces and learn about different styles. Instagram is also a fantastic platform to follow vintage shops who share tips and insights on styling 70s pieces, give us a follow here.

Trust Your Gut

At the end of the day, thrifting vintage clothing is also about wearing what you love. If a piece resonates with you—whether it’s the fabric, the style, or the story behind it—go for it!
